Generative AI can write the copy, compose the music, design the image and produce the film. Increasingly, it can do all of this with remarkable fluency. But does that make it creative?

That question sits at the heart of the Scriptorium Initiative’s new white paper, Can AI Create Beyond the Median? Generation, meaning and the changing role of creative professionals.

The paper starts from a distinction that is becoming increasingly important for anyone working in branding and communications: generation is not the same as creation. AI can make competent execution abundant and open creative tools to far more people. At the same time, when similar systems learn from the same accumulated culture, they risk pulling creative work towards the same familiar centre of gravity - or “the median.”

The paper explores the roles of life experience, taste, craft, authorship and responsibility in turning machine-generated possibilities into meaningful work - and argues that as generation becomes less scarce, the creative professional’s role moves upstream: from simply producing expressions to deciding what is worth expressing.

Its conclusion is both a challenge and an invitation. AI may raise the creative floor, but raising the ceiling still requires judgment: knowing what to pursue, what to transform and, increasingly, what to refuse.

The white paper also offers a first taste of one of the central conversations at the Scriptorium Initiative’s yearly conference, taking place 28–30 October in Amsterdam, where the implications of AI for creativity and the communications profession will be explored further.
